The Right People
One of the tactics that I have implemented in my business dealings is when I meet a person that strikes me as a gem, I always begin to think how we can create a mutually beneficial business relationship. This has paid off big for me many times. Sometimes the perfect situation takes years to show up, but I keep building the relationship, being mindful of looking for opportunities when they present themselves. The bonus of this approach is that you get to know people better and you get to verify early assumptions that you’ve made about that person’s character, work ethic, talent and so on.
Someone who doesn’t know me might be saying to themselves, “Well he just saddles up with someone for the sake of money.” What I can tell you, with full assurance, is that the people who know me would tell you that you are wrong. I do not maintain relationships with people only for what they have to offer me monetarily; that would be too much work. It’s physically and emotionally draining to act like you like someone when you don’t. It’s not for me.
As Oprah said, “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.”
I’m on board with this idea 100%. People I do business with know clearly that I put the relationship over money and will fight, and make tough choices to keep that in alignment. When the planets align and you have the right people in place, then you will enjoy doing business and it will be delicious. Wrap businesses around the right people and you will be wealthier in life and in your bank account.
For me personally, relationship building comes very easy and natural. Unfortunately, not all of us have that gift. For those of you that don’t, here is a list of 7 Relationship-Building Strategies for Your Business that you might find useful.
