Random Acts of Kindness
My sister recently told me a story that I want to retell. She had had a bad day going, all the common stuff, but it seemed to be happening all at once. She decided to treat herself to her favorite holiday coffee at a Starbucks. As she pulled up to the window to pay, the lady told her that the car in front of her had already paid for her coffee. She asked the clerk why, and her response was that they just wanted to do something nice for a random stranger.
Now, that was cool. Imagine the effect that had on her day. Not only that, my sister said she found herself looking for a way to do the same for someone else since that happened. Imagine if everyone who read this blog did the same sort of thing.
Random acts of kindness don’t have to be about gifts, they can manifest themselves in many ways: helping someone load their groceries, raking a neighbor’s leaves, or offering to watch someone’s kids to give the parents a night out. How about free movie tickets to a young couple, or a dinner paid for in secret while you’re eating out?
Think of something creative you might do. Make someone’s day, keep your identity secret, and make it uniquely special. Holidays are a tough time for many. I challenge you to be that person we all want to be.
There are two cool things about a random act of kind ness. One, i t will go full circle and come back to you in ways you can’t even imagine and secondly, just look at the ripple effect the person who bought my sister’s coffee caused.
Make it happen and feel free to send comments back to me with other ideas you might have and tell me how your experiment goes.
