One of my greatest pleasures in having a son is that I get to impart to him all the various ways I gain pleasure in life from just being a good man; things like heroism, bravery, integrity…and so on.  I have long dreamed of passing on my straight razor collection, and the skill required to use it.  While I adore my precious wife and daughters, straight razor shaving is something that the good Lord provided just for us boys.  These days, the forgotten pleasure of a straight razor shave has been forsaken for methods more expedient.  My son will know the difference.  In fact, every father should know this joy, and every son would be lucky indeed to sit on the counter and watch Daddy shave, and get to sample things like hot-towel luxury, warm foam removed by a cool steel blade (for now, I use the back of the blade on his face), and the old world rich aromas of the leather strop, witch hazel and Bay Rum.

Long into my son’s old age, these are among the most precious memories he will have of his dad.  Just the thought of that is an even greater comfort to me than the shave itself.
